Lithium primary cells pulling battery grade demand sharply upward
Lithium thionyl chloride cells deliver a very low self-discharge rate and hold usable capacity for well over a decade, which is why utility meters, industrial sensors, pipeline monitoring and connected devices specify them where nobody intends to change a battery. That duty demands 99.95% minimum purity with tight control on dissolved sulphur dioxide, a specification most industrial grade producers cannot reach at all. Cell manufacture is concentrated in East Asia, which pulls qualified supply there alongside it. Producers holding battery grade qualification realise well above industrial pricing on volumes that keep expanding each year.
Market Impact: Grows 10.2% annually to 2036
