Fusion Thermal Variants Expand Beyond Elite Unit Budgets
Quad-tube systems combining thermal imaging with traditional image intensifier tubes have historically been reserved for the most heavily funded special operations programs given their considerably higher unit cost, but declining thermal sensor prices have started extending fusion variant procurement into better-funded conventional special forces programs beyond the most elite tier. Teledyne FLIR and L3Harris have both expanded fusion product lines specifically to serve this broadening budget tier. This shift matters because fusion capability provides genuine tactical advantage in obscurant and low-contrast conditions where image intensification alone struggles, a capability gap procurement officials increasingly refuse to accept.
Market Impact: Cuts threat detection time by 35.
