Utility-scale solar developers are rapidly shifting away from large central inverter installations in favor of higher-capacity string architectures, since distributed string configurations limit the production impact of a single component failure and simplify field maintenance considerably compared to centralized designs. String inverters now represent 68 percent of newly installed capacity, up meaningfully from a much smaller share a decade earlier, and several major developers report string architecture as their default specification for new utility-scale projects regardless of project size. Central inverters retain a shrinking niche in the very largest utility installations where component density still matters.
