Iodine Pricing Reshapes Intermediate Commercial Structure
Elemental iodine moved from roughly twenty dollars per kilogram to well above sixty between 2020 and 2025, driven by constrained Chilean caliche output and flat Japanese brine production against demand from contrast agents, polarising film and animal feed. Iodine now represents 58% of intermediate production cost, against a much smaller share historically. That shift has forced producers to introduce metal pass-through pricing, forced customers to hedge or contract forward, and pushed several smaller synthesisers out of the business altogether rather than absorb it. Nothing about that pressure has eased since.
